Privacy policy

The short version. Protein Spy has no accounts and no sign-up. We do not ask for your name, email address or phone number, and we do not build a profile of you. Your favourites and settings stay on your phone. The app does use third-party services for advertising, subscription payments and crash reporting, and those services receive limited technical information about your device. The detail is below.
1. Who we are
Protein Spy is published by Lantern 6 Studios Ltd ("we", "us", "our"), a company registered in England and Wales (company number 15312809), registered office Suite 1-2 Brookfield Court, Selby Road, Leeds, United Kingdom, LS25 1NB.
For the purposes of UK data protection law, we are the data controller for the limited information described in this policy.
2. What we do not collect
We want to be clear about this first, because it covers most of what people worry about. Protein Spy does not collect:
- your name, email address, postal address or phone number;
- account credentials — there are no accounts;
- payment card details (see section 5);
- contacts, photos, files or your precise GPS location;
- health or fitness data, and nothing from Apple Health or Google Fit.
3. Information kept on your device
The app stores the following locally on your phone. It is not sent to us and we cannot see it:
- recipes and products you have saved as favourites;
- your filter and display preferences;
- whether you have an active subscription;
- a cached copy of the most recent price data, so the app opens quickly.
Deleting the app removes this information from your device.
4. Third-party services we use
Running the app relies on a small number of external providers. Each one receives only what it needs to do its job.
Advertising — Google AdMob
The free version of the app shows a banner advert supplied by Google AdMob. To serve and measure adverts, Google may process your device's advertising identifier, IP address, approximate (city-level) location, device type and operating system, and information about ads you have seen or interacted with. Google's own privacy information is at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.
Where the law requires it, we ask for your consent before personalised adverts are shown, using Google's consent form. On iOS, personalised advertising also depends on the App Tracking Transparency permission, which you can change at any time in your device settings. If you decline, you will still see adverts, but they will be non-personalised.
Subscriptions — RevenueCat
If you subscribe to Premium, we use RevenueCat to check and restore your purchase. RevenueCat receives an anonymous app-user identifier generated by the app, plus the purchase receipt issued by Apple or Google. It does not receive your name or payment details. See revenuecat.com/privacy.
App infrastructure and diagnostics — Google Firebase
Price data is delivered to the app through Google Firebase. We also use Firebase to record crashes and basic, aggregated usage counts (for example, how many times a screen was opened) so we can find and fix faults. These reports include technical details such as device model, operating system version, app version and a random installation identifier. They are not used to identify you. See firebase.google.com/support/privacy.
App stores
Apple and Google provide us with anonymised, aggregated statistics about downloads and crashes. We never see individual customer records.
5. Payments
All payments are taken by Apple or Google through your existing App Store or Google Play account, under their terms and their privacy policies. We do not see or store your card number, billing address or bank details.
6. Why we are allowed to process this information
- Legitimate interests — for running the app securely, fixing crashes and understanding aggregate usage, balanced against your privacy and limited to technical, non-identifying data.
- Consent — for personalised advertising, where required. You can withdraw consent at any time in your device settings, or via the privacy options in the app where available.
- Performance of a contract — for validating and restoring a Premium subscription you have bought.
7. How long information is kept
Data held on your device stays there until you delete it or remove the app. Crash and diagnostic reports are retained by our providers on their standard schedules, which are generally up to 90 days for crash data and up to 14 months for aggregated analytics. Subscription records are kept for as long as the subscription is active and afterwards for as long as we are required to keep financial records, normally six years.
8. International transfers
Our providers are based in, or process data in, countries outside the UK, including the United States. Where that happens, transfers are covered by the safeguards those providers put in place, such as the UK International Data Transfer Addendum or the EU Standard Contractual Clauses, or by a UK adequacy decision.
9. Children
Protein Spy is a shopping and budgeting tool intended for adults. It is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them. If you believe a child has used the app in a way that concerns you, contact us and we will help.
10. Your rights
Under UK data protection law you have the right to ask for a copy of your personal data, to have it corrected or erased, to object to or restrict how it is used, and to withdraw consent where processing is based on it.
Because the app does not identify you, we usually hold nothing that can be linked to you as an individual, so in many cases the practical answer to an erasure request is to reset your advertising identifier in your device settings and delete the app. Even so, we will always help where we can — write to privacy@proteinspy.co.uk and we will respond within one month.
If you are unhappy with how we have handled your information, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk or on 0303 123 1113.
11. Security
Data in transit between the app and our services is encrypted using HTTPS. No system is completely secure, but we keep the amount of information we handle deliberately small, which is the most effective protection we can offer you.
12. Changes to this policy
If we change how the app handles data, we will update this page and change the date at the top. Where a change materially affects you, we will flag it in the app.
