Terms of use
Last updated 22 July 2026
Read this part if you read nothing else. Protein Spy makes every effort to show accurate, current prices, but it cannot guarantee that any price is correct. Prices change constantly, and the figures in the app may miss promotions, loyalty discounts, multibuys, in-store markdowns and regional differences. Treat everything in the app as a guide to help you decide where to shop — never as a firm quote. Always check the price at the shelf, till or online checkout before you buy.
1. Who we are and how to contact us
Protein Spy is published by Lantern 6 Studios Ltd ("we", "us", "our"), a company registered in England and Wales (company number 15312809), registered office Suite 1-2 Brookfield Court, Selby Road, Leeds, United Kingdom, LS25 1NB.
2. Agreeing to these terms
By downloading or using Protein Spy, you agree to these terms. If you do not agree to them, please do not use the app. These terms are in addition to the terms of the App Store or Google Play, which also apply to your download.
3. What the app does
Protein Spy collects publicly listed product and price information from UK supermarkets, converts it into a cost per 100g of protein, and presents the results as a ranked comparison. It also provides high-protein recipes with an estimated ingredient cost.
Protein Spy is an information and comparison tool only. We do not sell food, we do not process grocery orders, and we are not a party to any purchase you make from a retailer.
4. Price and product information — accuracy
We take accuracy seriously and make every reasonable effort to keep the information in the app correct and up to date. We collect prices on a regular schedule and check the data for obvious errors. However, we cannot and do not guarantee that any price, product detail or calculation shown in the app is accurate, complete or current at the moment you look at it.
In particular, information in the app may not reflect:
- Promotions and offers — temporary price cuts, "was/now" pricing, multibuys, meal deals, bundle pricing, clearance and yellow-sticker reductions;
- Loyalty pricing — member-only prices such as Tesco Clubcard Prices, Nectar Prices or similar schemes, which may be materially lower than the shelf price we show;
- Vouchers, coupons and cashback, or any discount applied at the till or checkout;
- Regional and store-level variation — the same product may cost different amounts in different branches, and convenience or express formats are often priced differently from large stores;
- Online versus in-store differences, including delivery charges, service fees, minimum basket values and substitutions;
- Timing — prices change during the day, and there is always a delay between us collecting a price and you seeing it;
- Availability — a product shown in the app may be out of stock, discontinued, seasonal or not sold in your area;
- Pack, weight and format changes, including reduced pack sizes, drained versus undrained weights, and dry versus cooked weights;
- Errors at source — mislabelled products, incorrect listings or missing data published by a retailer or data provider, which we may repeat in good faith.
Cost per 100g of protein is a calculation based on the price and the nutritional information available to us. Rounding, packaging tolerances, cooking losses and manufacturer recipe changes all mean the figure is an estimate for comparison, not an exact measurement.
You are responsible for checking the actual price and product details with the retailer before buying. We are not liable for any difference between a price shown in the app and the price you are charged.
5. Nutrition, allergens and dietary information
Nutritional values, ingredients, allergen information and dietary labels such as "vegan" or "vegetarian" are taken from information published by retailers and manufacturers and may be out of date or incorrect. Recipes, protein figures and serving suggestions are provided for general information only and are not nutritional, dietary or medical advice.
If you have a food allergy, intolerance or medical condition, always check the packaging on the product itself and speak to a qualified professional. Never rely on the app.
6. We are independent of the supermarkets
Protein Spy is not affiliated with, endorsed by, sponsored by or connected to any supermarket or brand named in the app or on this website. Retailer names, logos and trade marks belong to their owners and are used only to identify the shops whose publicly listed prices are being compared. Inclusion or exclusion of a retailer is not a recommendation, and the app compares only the retailers listed in it — other shops may be cheaper.
7. The free version and advertising
The free version of the app is supported by advertising. We do not control the content of adverts served by our advertising partner, and showing an advert is not an endorsement of the advertiser or its products.
8. Premium subscription
- Premium costs £2.99 per month, or the equivalent shown in your local currency and store at the time of purchase.
- Payment is taken by Apple or Google through your App Store or Google Play account. We do not handle your payment details.
- Subscriptions renew automatically each month until cancelled. Your account is charged for renewal within 24 hours before the end of the current period.
- You can cancel at any time in your App Store or Google Play account settings, at least 24 hours before the next renewal date. Cancelling stops future payments; you keep Premium access until the end of the period you have already paid for.
- You can restore a previous purchase on a new device using the "Restore purchases" option in the app, provided you use the same store account.
- Refunds are handled by Apple or Google under their own policies, as they take the payment. We will help where we can if something has gone wrong.
- If we change the subscription price, we will tell you in advance and you will have the chance to cancel before the new price applies.
- Premium features may be added, changed or removed over time. We will not remove a core advertised feature during a period you have already paid for without offering you a way out.
9. Acceptable use
You may use Protein Spy for your own personal, non-commercial shopping. You may not:
- copy, scrape, harvest or systematically extract data from the app, including by automated means;
- republish, resell or redistribute our price data, calculations or recipes;
- reverse engineer, decompile or attempt to interfere with the app or the services behind it, except where the law expressly allows it;
- use the app in a way that damages it, disrupts it for other people, or breaks the law.
10. Intellectual property
We own or license the app, its design, the Protein Spy name and logo, our recipes and the way our data is compiled and presented. Using the app gives you a personal, revocable, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to use it on devices you own or control. It does not transfer any ownership to you.
11. Availability and changes
We aim to keep the app running and the data flowing, but we cannot promise it will always be available or uninterrupted. We may update, suspend, restrict or withdraw the app or any feature, including where a data source becomes unavailable. Some updates may be required for the app to keep working.
12. Our responsibility to you
The app is provided for general information. To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for:
- any loss arising from your reliance on price, product or nutritional information in the app, including paying more than you expected, wasted journeys, or products being unavailable;
- loss of profit, loss of business, business interruption, or loss of business opportunity;
- any loss that was not foreseeable at the time you started using the app.
Nothing in these terms excludes or limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or for anything else that cannot legally be excluded or limited.
If you are a consumer, you have legal rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 in relation to digital content that is faulty or not as described. Nothing in these terms affects those rights. Advice about them is available from your local Citizens Advice or from the Consumer Service on 0808 223 1133.
Where we are liable to you for a defect in paid digital content, our total liability is limited to the amount you have paid us for the app in the twelve months before the claim.
13. Ending your use of the app
You can stop using the app at any time by deleting it. We may end your access if you seriously or repeatedly breach these terms.
14. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms from time to time, for example to reflect new features or changes in the law. The current version will always be on this page with the date it was updated. If a change materially affects you, we will bring it to your attention in the app.
15. Governing law
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales. If you are a consumer, you can bring proceedings in the courts of the part of the United Kingdom where you live; otherwise, the courts of England and Wales have exclusive jurisdiction.
